Duke of Edinburgh Progress Report: Brainstorming my Board

[Credit: The Paint Crusader]

With slightly more detailed plan of action set out in the form of ‘let’s make an Armies on Parade entry’, I now have to actually decide what I should do for the board. My heart is set on it being a Heresy-era display, as we don’t see enough Heresy stuff as is, and it gives me an excuse opportunity to start collecting a 30K/40K force. As of current, I have a couple of ideas I am considering working on. They are (drumroll please):

The Siege of Terra Defence Force

Considering this is the climatic finale to the Heresy, it seems fitting to represent it in my board. It would likely be a mix of the Blood Angels and Imperial Fists Legions, as both were present in large numbers during the Siege. Setting it on Terra also offers some good scenery for the board, probably a section of defensive wall garrisoned by the Imperial Fists, with the Blood Angels standing in front of the wall, ready to launch an attack at anyone who comes close.

Isstvan III Loyalists

This would again be a great fluffy force featuring several Legions. I’d probably include the Emperor’s Children, the Sons of Horus and the Death Guard in the display, as they all contribute key figures to the story, in the form of Tarvitz, Loken and Garro. The board could also be quite evocative of the situation, reflecting the now virus-bombed surface of Isstvan III, devoid of all life and littered with the remains of loyalist forces. The option to centre the force around the 3 Legions and their commanders would be incredibly thematic.

Legion Parade

Considering this is armies on parade, a parade may not be a bad idea. The main problem with this would be picking a Legion, as I like all of them! If I was to do this, I’d like to include at least one squad of Legion-specific units, and a Legion-specific Praetor from FW.

Isstvan V Loyalists

This is perhaps the idea I’m the least sure on, mainly because I think that all 3 Legions have colourschemes that involve a fair amount of black paint, so each force will probably stand out less. Each model could be converted to tell its own story though, exhausted from hours of endless conflict, and covered in the grime and blood of their fellow brothers.

I haven’t made my mind up yet, and I suspect that a fair deal of thinking is still required. Who knows, I might come up with an even better idea altogether! Until next time,
