Duke of Edinburgh Progress Report: The Many Shades of Traitors

My paints arrived Tuesday, so I got straight to it painting up some old Tartaros terminators I had from about a year ago. I’d painted them pretty poorly the first time, so they needed some fresh paint anyways. In the end, I did 3 out of a squad of 5 before I felt I had a nice scheme. The other 2 may get painted up just to refine what I’ve currently got. So without further ado, lets take a look at my efforts:

As you can see, there’s been a fair amount of change in design from Terminator 1 to Terminator 3, based on my personal preference of how I wanted my Sons of Horus to look. I’ve settled on Terminator 3 as my final scheme, but I’ll take a look at all of them in greater detail down below.

This guy was actually painted before I had my new paints, which is why he looks quite different from my other two. Overall, he’s too dark for a Son of Horus, and a shade or two too blue as well. When I posted these guys on Reddit, one user suggested they might work as a 1st Company scheme for Justaerin and Reavers, so I’ll bear that in mind.

This was my second termie, and the first one with the new paints. He’s certainly much closer to the tradiational Sons of Horus scheme, though I felt he was overly dark in some places, and some of the highlights I tried, particularly on the back of him, looked too bright against the fairly dark green. This guy also convinced me to buy transfers, as it turns out freehanding that Legion symbol more than once is a bad idea.

With that, we come to the final model, Terminator 3. This guy is pretty much spot on for the scheme I wanted. It’s a fairly bright green/blue, but it doesn’t feel too oversaturated. I also washed the bronze with Reikland Fleshshade instead of Agrax Earthshade, so it looks a bit warmer and less dirty. I skipped any attempt at freehanding the Eye of Horus, but there is a Cthonic rune on his other shoulder pad. Some of the highlights on him came out a bit bright at first, but I toned them down with a thin glaze of Sons of Horus Green, so they don’t clash too much.

That’s all I’ve got for today, so until next time,
